Circulatory System Part 4 - Real life application
Why does your heart beat faster when you exercise?
- Your muscles need more carbon dioxide so the heart beats faster to increase the levels of carbon dioxide they get
- Your muscles need more oxygen so the heart beats faster to increase the levels of oxygen they get
- You breathe heavier so increased oxygen goes to the heart causing it to beat faster
- You breathe heavier so increased carbon dioxide goes to the heart causing it to beat faster
How does a heart attack happen?
- Blood is blocked in an artery and it can not reach the heart so it doesn't get the oxygen it needs
- The cells in the heart become infected and malfunction
- There is a decrease in glucose due to low red blood cells in the blood and the heart can not keep pumping
- Red Blood cells can not reach parts of the brain and those brain cells distort the signal to the heart
How does a stroke happen?
- Blood in the brain can not release the carbon dioxide due to ruptured capillaries
- Blood is blocked in an artery and it can not reach the heart
- There is a decrease in glucose due to low red blood cells in the blood and the heart can not keep pumping
- Blood can not reach parts of the brain and those brain cells die
Why does skin turn red after a sunburn?
- The capillaries in the area have burst due to high ultra violet radiation
- Capillaries open wider and allow more blood flow to the skin in order to bring more white blood cells to the area
- The sun's radiation causes small blockages near the skin so blood builds up in those areas
- Arteries decrease blood flow to the skin because it is damaged and the skin becomes irritated
What is Hemophilia?
- When your blood is low in iron
- When your red blood cells are sickle shaped
- When your blood is low in white blood cells
- When your blood can not clot normally
Why are veins blue?
- The blood is low in oxygen and the blood is blue until the blood hits oxygen rich air
- It is the way light hits the veins, the blue light is the only light scattered back towards us
- The blood is high in oxygen and the blood is blue until the blood hits oxygen poor air
- There is a pigment called melanin which makes it blue due the proteins it creates
Where are most of your blood cells made?
- In your bone marrow
- In your heart
- In your kidney
- In your liver
